For people who skew their judgment of a vehicle heavily toward driving performance, the RAV4 is guaranteed to be a boring option. However, that isn’t this SUV's target audience, and it does better than most for what it is intended to do.

The Toyota RAV4 consistently ranks as one of the best-selling nameplates in the world thanks to its mix of extreme practicality, competitive affordability, and an easygoing driving profile that combines to create a common sense package devoid of gimmicks that is hard to refuse.

The 2023 RAV4 stays entrenched in this tradition, carrying over most of the rugged silhouette and the slightly dated cabin of its predecessor while retaining all the functionality and features that make it the quintessential sensible and practical compact SUV.

The major notable change to this year’s model is the upgrade of the onboard tech that swaps out the outdated infotainment system from last year for a more modern option and adds larger standard display screens.

You now get an 8-inch infotainment screen on the base LE model, up from the previously standard 7-inch, and a sizable 10.5-inch display on all higher trims. Toyota also adds a new optional 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster on the TRD Off-Road and XLE Premium models while raising the standard instruments cluster for all models to a 7-inch digital unit.

Everything else carries over, with the new RAV4 retaining its focus on maximizing ergonomics, ensuring an abundance of storage space both inside the cabin and cargo areas, its sensible road manner, attractive base price, and rugged good looks that consistently make it an obvious choice for conservative shoppers.

Powering the 2023 Toyota RAV4 is a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that comes with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, Toyota now offers all-wheel drive (as an option) on select, range-topping trims.
