The Kona Electric is a charming little SUV that doesn’t compromise on its gasoline-powered counterpart's fun and quirky character while providing a dramatically more eco-friendly package. It has the same funky design and features as the regular Kona but with a battery pack and an electric motor that eliminates fossil use and provides a smooth and quiet ride.

Other winning elements that the new Kona EV retains from last year include a competitive driving range and decent power output at a reasonable price tag that edges out most of the competition. You also get a full dose of Hyundai’s excellent warranty and free maintenance package, which bests what is on offer with most other small EVs in this class.

For 2023, the only big change to this nameplate is a shuffling of the trims. Hyundai renames the previous SEL trim, making it the new base SE trim, a new higher SEL trim now comes standard with everything in the SEL Convenience Package, while the range-topping Limited trim remains unchanged.

Notable modifications to the onboard features since 2022 also appear, with automatic power front windows, an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, driver lumbar support, and heated front seats becoming standard across the range. The standard 10.3-inch infotainment unit on the Limited models also makes its way to the new SEL trim. Other features present on the SEL trim include wireless smartphone charging, a sunroof, and a rear USB port.

However, you get the same power setup regardless of the trim you choose. Propelling the 2023 Hyundai Kona EV is a generous 201-hp electric motor (front-wheel drive only) that pairs with a 64.0-kWh battery pack to provide sufficient driving range. The setup also comes equipped with aggressive regenerative braking, which Hyundai claims will further extend the Kona EV’s range to 258 miles.
