Mid-size crossovers are arguably one of the most boring market segments there is. No surprise there, as these vehicles are often marketed as the quintessential starter family car, and this target audience rarely has an “exciting build” near the top of their list.

However, the first generation C-HR, released originally in 2016, gave potential buyers that stirring option that broke the mold. Initially produced as an experiment by Toyota in which they gave their designers free rein to conceptualize a new aesthetic format for this market segment, the original C-HR series went on to do surprisingly well globally (though poorly in North America,) leading to the much-awaited release of the second generation of this model with the 2023 Toyota C-HR.

Avid car enthusiasts who remember the C-HR Prologue concept Toyota showcased last won’t be a bit surprised by the new release. The 2023 C-HR features a nearly identical layout (and aesthetics) to the concept car, building on the audacious and polarizing design of the old C-HR and giving the vehicle an even more fun, sportier look with sharper lines on all sides.

The interior, which is now slightly more roomy (despite the car maintaining the same footprint,) borrows heavily from the new Prius but retains the same more commanding driver position and has the dashboard controls angled more towards the driver’s seat.

The 2023 Toyota C-HR also sports many tech options, including an infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster that can go up to 12.3 inches each, an ambient lighting system with automatic color change functionality, and a premium JBL speaker system.

Under the hood, every powertrain option is electrified. The base unit is a 138-horsepower four-cylinder, 1.8-liter hybrid engine that pairs with front-wheel drive. The next step up is a 194-horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder hybrid with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Alternatively, you can opt for the expected plug-in hybrid option, which might be the same 220-horsepower setup available on the Toyota Prius Prime.
