About The Antara

The Opel Antara was sold all over the world under various brand and model names, replacing the popular mid-size SUV the Frontera in 2006.

At various times you could find it on sale as the:

  • Opel Antara in Europe (excluding the UK)
  • Vauxhall Antara in the UK
  • Holden Captiva in Australia and New Zealand
  • Chevrolet Captiva and the Saturn Vue in North America
  • GMC Terrain in the Middle-East
  • Daewoo Winstorm MaXX in South Korea

Underneath, the Antara was built on the Theta platform and was essentially a short-wheelbase version of the Chevrolet Equinox chassis.

Inside the car, you can find 5-seats in the European versions but across the pond in the USA the models featured 7-seats.

Its classed as a compact crossover SUV as it shares many of the same body measurements as a normal compact (non-SUV) car like the Vauxhall/Opel Astra.

As it lacks any real offroading equipment (such as heavy axles, a body-on-frame chassis and a transfer box) its classed as a “crossover” SUV which brings benefits such as reduced weight.

What it does boast is a high seating position and loads of room inside the cab for occupants, cargo and features/technology.

All of the Antara models (and those sold under other brands and model names) have 5-doors and come with either a front-wheel-drive setup or an optional four-wheel-drive if upgraded.

Thanks to the platform being shared with several other well-established models the range of engine for the car are vast.

You can choose from a more economical 2.4-liter gasoline all the way through to a torque-heavy 3.6-liter V6 gasoline.

Turbodiesel options have also existed for the Opel Antara in various markets (such as Europe but not North America) with a few hybrid drivetrains too.

In 2010 the model received a facelift that saw the front-end get a refresh while inside the car the storage and center console were improved.

Technology in the car was also upgraded to include an electronic parking brake and a “shift-up” indicator to help drivers achieve a better fuel economy.
