When the Citroen C4 made its return in 2020 with a new third generation, it did so quite assertively, with a funky new redesign that basically reinvented this nameplate as a stylish coupe-esque crossover that stands out markedly from a family hatchback market segment that is notorious for dull-looking options, one of which was the old Citroen C4.

Leaving behind the bland and boring conventional C-sector hatchback that used to bear its name, the new C4’s bold exterior styling, complete with its coupe-styled hatch and dominant SUV footprint, combines to create a rakish offering that easily stands out in its crowded category.

The C4 also features a new part of LED headlights that are bolder and more aggressive than usual, reinforcing the market deviation from the typically softer, more rounded look that Citroen typically opts for in this class, and completes a front profile that is reminiscent of sporty-themed nameplates like the SEAT Leon, Kia Ceed, and Mazda 3.

The new C4 also showcases Citroen’s expertise in comfort and technology, offering a smooth and relaxing ride and a range of innovative features in its cabin.

However, overlooking the 2023 Citroen C4’s stylish exterior, the vehicle will have a tough time competing in the market segment. While the new car does offer a well-rounded suite of features and an exterior view, poshness is non-existent in its cabin. Plus, while the C4’s exterior appears larger than most of the competition thanks to its unique aesthetics, in reality, it is pretty mediocre in the practicality department, offering average stats for roominess and cargo space.

Under the hood, the 2023 Citroen C4 focuses more on providing a wealth of options than going all out in firepower.

Available engine options include gasoline, diesel, and fully electric setups. The petrol engine is a 1.2-liter PureTech three-cylinder with three different tuning levels: 100 horsepower, 130 horsepower, and 155 horsepower. The diesel engine engines are 100-horsepower and 110-HP versions of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder, while an entirely electric C4 is available as a standalone e-C4 model.
