The Toyota Hilux is the world’s best-selling pick-up truck, everywhere except in North America, where the Ford Series and the Chevy Silverado still reign supreme.

These statistics tell you what you need to know about Toyota’s Hilux problem and why they are taking gradual steps towards fixing it with the 2023 offering.

The Toyota Hilux takes a different, functional approach to the pickup truck market segment, as it opts to provide a reliable workhorse that delivers a solid performance every time but without all the bells and whistles that you would expect with any of the showy American options. It also offers one of the most practical builds and some of the best bang for your buck in this market segment.

This unpretentiousness and utilitarian approach may be enough for the rest of the world, but in America—and other first-world markets, as they get more big-SUV-crazy—it just doesn't cut it, not enough to take the top spots at least.

With the 2023 Hilux, Toyota takes baby steps to make this nameplate endear itself more to lifestyle truck buyers while retaining everything that made this vehicle great to avoid alienating its existing fanbase.

The apparent first step caters to the “bigger engine is always better” crowd by offering a new range-topping four-cylinder 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine that makes up to 268.2 hp, up from the lower-powered 2.4-liter from last year.

Toyota also makes significant strides toward improving the kit options for this pickup truck, with the addition of more luxurious options like heated leather seats, ambient lighting, a JBL hi-fi stereo system, a dramatically improved touchscreen infotainment unit, panoramic view monitor, dual-zone air conditioning, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The new Hilux also now has an automatic transmission option.

Another critical change to the 2023 Hilux that caters more to lifestyle truck buyers is in how Toyota tunes the pickup’s suspension. Rather than tuning the truck with a loaded bed as it has always done, the latest Hilux is tuned with an empty bed to guarantee the smoothest ride with the pickup unloaded, as most buyers would use it most of the time.
