For decades, the utilitarian Toyota Hilux has remained one of the best-selling trucks everywhere except in the United States. Hence, it is no surprise that as far back as 1995, Toyota realized they needed an option in this market segment explicitly bred for North America.

Today, the mid-size Tacoma, which is made in America, offers a nameplate that inherits all the ruggedness and indestructibility of the Hilux while offering a wider wheelbase, typically more powerful powertrain options, and several other subtle differences in aesthetics and features that will endear this option better to its American audience.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma maintains this ethos, carrying over from the previous year’s model with no ground-breaking changes. The bulk of the adjustments to the 2023 model come in the form of cosmetic changes to the trims and changes to the features available with specific variants.

For 2023, the company adds new paint job options to the TRD Pro and TRD Sport trims, standard driver’s seat power adjustability, automatic dual-zone climate control, and Toyota’s Smart Key functionality to V6 SR5 models and the Double Cab Limited trim.

Elsewhere, two new appearance packages are now available on the SR5 trim: the Chrome Package, available on five-foot-bed Double Cab SR5s, that adds chrome accents to the door handles, tailgate logo, and exhaust tips, as well as polished 18-inch wheels and a leather-covered shift knob. A SX package, previously exclusive to the SR trim, also makes its way to all V-6 SR5s as an optional upgrade, adding a blacked-out tone to the fenders, wheels, lug nuts, badge, and other elements inside and outside the truck.

Under the hood, the 2023 Tacoma does little to change the formula of its bestselling but aging powertrains.

Engine options include a haggard 159-horsepower inline-four-cylinder base option with a six-speed automatic transmission and a more respectable 278-horsepower V-6 that can be mated to either the same automatic transmission or a six-speed manual alternative.
