Leave it to BMW to produce an entry-level SUV that neither looks, costs, nor drives like any other in the category. Although the X1 is the lowest on the rung for BMW SUVs, its on-brand design, functional shape, and aggressive driving performance simply outclass most of the competition in the subcompact SUV market segment.

The 2024 X1 retains everything to like about this nameplate and adds an even sportier performance-oriented trim.

The new M35i xDrive variant improves on an already fantastic subcompact SUV, adding a beefier 2-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs 312 horsepower, high-performance brakes, an adaptive suspension system, a sportier-looking exterior, a reimagined front grille, a black exterior trim, faux-suede interior trim, sport front seats, and an M-branded steering wheel.

Elsewhere, powertrain options remain the same, with the retained standard powertrain being a 2-liter four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower. Both powertrains come standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Inside, the tech setup also sees some changes, with the latest iDrive 9 infotainment system finally appearing on their entry-level SUV to bring it on par with their more expensive nameplates. The infotainment unit that houses the new software uses the same design language as that on BMW’s range-topping 7-series sedan, featuring a single wide touchscreen panel that serves both as the infotainment screen and a digital gauge display.

The rest of the cabin sports a decidedly BMW look, with a contemporary interior with designer elements like eucalyptus open-pore wood panels and textured speaker grilles that complement the fully digital dashboard and the floating center console in front.

Every trim of the 2024 BMW X1 also ships with ambient interior lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a power liftgate that helps to bolster the fairly premium feel of the cabin, which is quite notable in a subcompact SUV.

Optional upgrades that enhance the in-cabin experience include a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a wireless charging pad, a premium Harman/Kardon speaker system, and a panoramic sunroof.
