About The 1
The Polestar was released in 2019 as Volvo’s luxury offshoot brand’s first dedicated car. Of course in such a short time, there has only been a single generation to hit the markets as of yet.
Volvo announced that only 1,500 models would be sold across the globe, making it quite a rare vehicle in its own right.
The 2-door coupe is built on the Volvo Scalable Product Architecture platform and is supported exclusively by all-wheel drive. This is made possible through a front-mounted engine and the implementation of dual rear electric motors. This is what brings the sports car into the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) class and sets it apart from its fully-electric sibling, the Polestar 2.
As the Polestar 1 is essentially a grand tourer, it goes up against some big names in the luxury sports car group. The most notable of these are the BMW 8 Series, Bentley Continental GT, and Porsche 911.
Engine options are limited to a spritely 2.0 L twin-charged inline-4 petrol engine that has been manufactured in-house. Bringing up the rear are two integrated starter generator motors. Both systems running in conjunction means that the model is capable of delivering up to 600 hp or 447 kW. This results in the approximately 2,345 kg hybrid doing 0-100 km/h in about 4.2 seconds.
Transmission options are limited to only a single 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Similarly, there are no trim options to be had. However, there is a short list of optional extras that can help change the aesthetic of the model.
Polestar announced that the limited production run of the model ended in 2022, making way for the release of the Polestar 4 and 5 models in the near future. Despite making so few models, it has remained on sale into 2023.
