While BMW does bring some changes to their smallest SUV for this year’s release, in practice, it is virtually the same car from last year.
The entry-level SUV is easily a fan-favorite for many thanks to its mix of practicality, BMW’s renowned drivetrain engineering, and relative affordability, especially considering its association with the opulent brand image. For 2023, it maintains this status quo.
While the 2023 BMW X1 does not bring any radical new changes from 2022, it makes marginal improvements to everything that makes it great, offering slightly increased dimensions and consequent growth in cabin space for passengers and cargo, updates to the interior and the infotainment setup that bring them to par with what you get on other modern offerings from the power maker, and a minor improvement of the firepower under the hood.
The X1’s exterior also gets some cosmetic touches, introducing a bolder dual-kidney front grille and incorporating a few more fine lines across its silhouette.
Another notable change to this year’s release is that BMW dropped the front-wheel drive version of the X1 and now offers the nameplate with only one trim. Hence, if you are buying the 2023 BMW X1, what you are getting under the hood is pretty straightforward—a 241-horsepower (13 more HP than before) 2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine mated with a newly introduced dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Also noteworthy is the absence of the M model (BMW’s performance-enhancing option for its nameplates) for this year, although it may still be released later. For now, the only available package enhancements available for the X1 are an M Sport package that adds some eye-catching accents and an adaptive suspension and a Convenience package that adds comforts like a wireless charging pad, auto-dimming mirrors, keyless entry, and a panoramic sunroof.
