With Americans becoming increasingly crazed about SUVs, it is unsurprising that Hyundai is killing off their hyper-successful Accent (known as the Verna in some markets) in the United States market, favoring the expansion of their crossover lineup instead.

However, despite being retired in the U.S., the subcompact continues to wax strong elsewhere, a fact confirmed with the announcement of the 2023 model introducing a new, sixth-generation Accent. This isn’t shocking, as the Accent, which was introduced in 1994 to replace the outgoing Hyundai Excel, has become a bedrock of the brand’s portfolio due to the substantial demand for its inviting mix of modern styling, reliability, and reasonable, competitive pricing.

Speculations suggest the new iteration will bring a significant redesign featuring aesthetic elements borrowed from the Elantra.

Expected exterior modifications include an increased slope on the roofline, a more boxy tailgate, redesigned tail lights and rear bumper, a broader, more dominant front grille, sharper front bumper lines, and headlamps that are positioned much lower than where they were on the 2022 model. So, a lot.

As customary with the previous iteration, the 2023 Hyundai Accent is available in hatchback and sedan body styles. You also get your choice of two powertrain options.

The base engine on the new Accent is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 113 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque. Alternatively, you can opt for the higher-powered turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder alternative that produces a more aggressive 158 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines come mated with a standard six-speed manual gearbox. However, you can switch the transmission on the base powertrain with a continuously variable automatic or opt for a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox on the turbocharged setup.
