Thanks to their ultra-popular Outback and the decently performing Forester, Subaru's credentials in the off-road department cannot be contested. However, while their smallest SUV, the Subaru Crosstrek, looks the part, it is nowhere near its cousins regarding outdoorsy character.

While the Crosstrek’s muscular styling gives off the air of a trail-ready warrior, it is more suited for pavement than rugged terrain. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek does little to change this fact. The only significant adjustment with this year’s release is the addition of a new Special Edition Trim that sports an exclusive paint job and interior aesthetics.

The Subaru Crosstrek shares the same platform as the Impreza hatchback, so it comes with a car-like performance, handling, and driving experience rather than what you would expect with vehicles built specially to handle the dirt.

However, you get Subaru’s renowned all-wheel drive system standard on all models, a lifted suspension, and sufficient ground clearance to keep the vehicle’s undercarriage safe on grassland and rough dirt roads.

The Sport and the new Limited Edition trims take some extra steps to boost the 2023 Crosstrek’s credentials, as they feature larger 17-inch wheels and the brawnier range-topping 182-horsepower 2.5-liter engine that also appears on the Outback station wagon.

For lower trims, you are stuck with a laggard 2-liter four-cylinder engine that significantly detracts from the vehicle’s performance, especially when paired with the optional continuously variable automatic transmission. Even the standard six-speed manual transmission does little to alleviate the problem.

Alternatively, you can opt for the Crosstrek Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid that mates a 2-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The Crosstrek Hybrid also has a standard all-wheel-drive system and a continuously variable automatic transmission and supports electric-only driving up to a range of 17 miles.
