When you get a modern Volvo, you know what to expect: sleek, minimalist, Scandinavian-style, plush interiors, muted but elegant and distinctive presence, and efficient pocket-friendly engines under the hood. The 2023 XC60 delivers on all counts.

Like the 2022 model, the new Volvo XC60 offers the same distinguishing unique take on the luxury SUV market that combines an interior cabin that is more minimalist than most other options in the class, albeit without skimping out on the luxuriousness.

The inherited cabin exudes tasteful styling and detailing that complements the formal but handsome exterior to create a look that is guaranteed to attract mass appeal.

However, while the Volvo XC60 can hold its own in the design department, it struggles to match the practicality of its top competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Its smaller cubbies and cargo space make it slightly more compact than other compact luxury SUVs.

For 2023, Volvo barely makes any changes to this nameplate’s formula. The only notable difference on the marketing sheet is a change of the trim level names, with the new XC60 Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims representing solely a change in nomenclature from the pre-existing Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription models. Volvo also dropped some of its unique upholstery options, added new wheel designs, and switched up the availability of certain features like its air suspension across trims.

Under the hood, things remain the same, with Volvo offering three powertrain options branded B5, B6, and T8, all of which come mated with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Both the B5 and B6 powertrains feature the same 2-liter four-cylinder engine, which the B5 pairs with a 48-volt hybrid system to produce 247 horsepower, and the B6 mates with a supercharger to make a more aggressive 295 HP. The range-topping T8 ups things dramatically with a more powerful 2-liter four-cylinder that pairs with a multiple electric motor to produce a brawny 455 horsepower.
