The Land Rover Defender is proof that the ultimate off-road warrior can exist without compromising the refinement of its interior or the graciousness of its movement within the city.

For those who would instead not tow the truck-ish route plotted by brutish offerings like the legendary Jeep Wrangler, the Land Rover Defender offers a worthy contender for the perfect balance between off-road proficiency and retro-modern elegance.

True to form, the 2024 Land Rover Defender continues with the same ethos, with the only significant change with the new release being a modification to the options available on its various wheelbase models.

For 2024, the mid-size wheelbase Defender 110 offers an optional County Exterior package with unique 20-inch wheel designs, a two-tone exterior paint scheme, and illuminated door sill protectors.

While the smaller Defender 90 models remain mostly the same, the long-wheelbase 130 model sees the most changes, now featuring an optional upgrade 518-hp supercharged V-8 that was previously only selectable on the 110 and 90 models and sees the addition of a new Outbound trim that forgoes the third seating row and rearmost windows, opting instead for increased cargo space and more optionality for exterior customization with available accessories.

In addition to its three wheelbase size options, the Defender also offers a trio of engines to choose from—a base four-cylinder turbocharged engine that comes standard, a larger 3-liter inline-six unit that pairs with a 48-volt hybrid system and an electric supercharger, and the range-topping 518-hp supercharged V-8 option.

As expected, all powertrain options include a four-wheel drive system, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and locking differentials that ensure the Defender is a controlled beast even on the most treacherous terrains.

Unlike the previous year’s model, the 2024 Land Rover Defender now features a unibody construction (ditching the body-on-frame format,) which adds further sturdiness, uses a fully independent suspension in place of the old solid axles, and boasts an ample 11.5-inch ground clearance and a water-wading ability that can handle 35 inches of water, beating off-road champion the Jeep Wrangler on both counts.
