About The Mariner

A compact crossover SUV, the Mariner was created by Mercury, a brand itself formed by Ford approximately 80 years ago.

A luxurious alternative to the Ford Escape, the Mariner showcased the famous waterfall grille, a design feature that can be found on the Opel Adam.

Mercury introduced their Hybrid version of the Mariner to the USA market a year after the initial release in 2006, and this was essentially a rebadged version of the Ford Escape Hybrid. Mercury sold this variant for just four years, pulling it in 2010 with a sales total of just 12,300. With a full hybrid electric system, the car could automatically switch between pure electric, purely gasoline, or a combination of the two (electric battery and petrol). When the vehicle would brake or accelerate, the Mariner could use regenerative braking with the electric drive motor turning into a generator converting momentum into electricity that could be directly stored in the battery.

Between the standard Mercury Mariner and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, there was almost no power difference between the two, to extend to even the acceleration rate, but the latter could produce 34 miles per gallon and is sometimes referred to as the ‘most fuel-efficient sport utility vehicle in America.’

In addition to this accolade, the Mariner also received Consumers Digests’ coveted ‘Best Buy’ for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 plus ‘2006 Green Car of the Year.’

Sales remained consistent, with a strong 30,000 units sold roughly per year.

As a result of Ford focusing its efforts solely on the Lincoln models, the decision was made to shut down the Mercury brand which had been in existence since November 4th, 1938.

A number of Mercury vehicles ceased production in 2011, with the very last model, the Mercury Grand Marquis, rolling off the production line on January 4th.
