2005 Volkswagen Golfs are examples of the fifth-generation of design that only entered the market in the previous model year.

That new 2004 model of the car was massively different from the previous fourth-generation version that was wider and lower.

It also sat on a new platform that VW called the A5 which is shared with models such as the Audi A3 and the Skoda Octavia.

Later on in the year of 2005 customers could start ordering the GT trim of the Golf which featured a sport twincharger 1.4-liter gasoline engine or a 2-liter turbodiesel.

The twincharger technology uses superchargers that cut off after a certain RPM and allow a turbocharger to take over, getting the best from both worlds.

In Europe the R32 high-performance variant of the Golf went on sale in 2005, featuring a 3.2-liter VR6 engine up front powering up to all four wheels.

As standard, the R32 powers the front wheels until the car starts to lose traction and sends some of the power to the rear wheels at the same time.

2005 also saw several new awards being given to the Golf line, including "Best Hot Hatch" for the GTI trim from Auto Express magazine.
