All of the 2007 VW Golf models sold across Europe and North America are part of the fifth generation of design.

They sit on the A5 platform from Volkswagen that is also used underneath the Touran and the Jetta too.

The move to the fifth generation was huge for the Golf line with the design changing considerably, this newer model is thinner and slightly longer than before.

Even though the outside proportions have decreased in size the internal cargo volume has increased due to a smart design.

In order to do this Volkswagen altered the Mk5 chassis (as seen in the 2007 model) so that the suspension takes up less room.

The station-wagon version of this new Golf was introduced to Europe in March of 2007, North American customers got it later in the year but it was labeled as the Jetta SportWagen instead.

A high-performance version of this car was also introduced to the USA in late-2007 called the R32.

This R32 version was fitted with a WV-produced 3.2-liter VR6 that could also be found in the previous Mk4 Golf in just the 2004 model year in the US.

The 2007 R32 could reach 60mph in 6.5 seconds, reduced to 6.2 seconds if fitted with the optional direct-shift gearbox.

Power was fed to all four wheels through a part-time four-wheel-drive system that activated the rear axle once the front wheels started to lose traction.
