The S-Cross (formerly known as the SX4 S-Cross) is a popular SUV from Suzuki that offers a competitive price and decent value for money.

However, in recent years, the S-Cross has been lagging behind the class toppers in a few areas, and its utilitarian, dated cabin design and its crude hybrid system do little to help its case. The new 2023 Suzuki SX4 S-Cross doesn’t do anything to change this fact either.

With the current generation of the S-Cross first released in 2013, the nameplate is due for an overhaul that will make it provide more aesthetic competition for newer SUVs in this weight class.

Even the vehicle’s sizing is problematic to its ambitions of being a bastion of practicality, as it is considerably smaller—since it has maintained its dimensions over the years and hasn't grown its wheelbase like other compact SUV offerings—than most other popular compact SUVs, like the Toyota RAV4 or the Suzuki Across.

This problem is further compounded by the fact that with the hybrid option, the battery pack is positioned underneath and cuts into the volume of the trunk, significantly reducing the cargo it can carry. This hybrid option ends up with a smaller cargo hold than smaller SUVs like the Toyota Yaris Cross and the Renault Captur.

However, the real letdown for users who judged a car strongly by its aesthetics will be the SUV’s rather unimpressive exterior looks, the somewhat dated ambiance, and the lack of plushness of its cabin.

Nevertheless, for its price, the 2023 Suzuki SX4 S-Cross still offers considerable value for money which earns it a second look.

The 113-horsepower naturally aspirated 1.5-litre hybrid engine that pairs with a Boosterjet 48v motor is less refined than options from some of its top competitors. However, it still offers enough fuel savings to make it a decent option. Alternatively, you can stick with the cheaper but more powerful 1.4-liter turbocharged base engine that produces 127 horsepower.
