The Toyota Prado is a full-size all-wheel drive SUV produced by the brand in their Land Cruiser range (as a light-duty variant that juxtaposes against the heavier members in the range that are a mainstay in North America) that is extremely popular in select markets but conspicuously absent in others.

For example, the models sold under the Prado name were not part of the range on offer in North America until this year’s release, where it debuted without the Prado name, marketed simply as “Land Cruiser.” Before then, the closest thing to the Prado in the United States market was the Lexus GX based on it.

In other markets, the Prado may appear under a variety of other names, including Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Prado, or “Land Cruiser” paired with several model number suffixes like LC70, LC90, LC120, LC150, and LC250, depending on variations in the platform.

However, irrespective of its nomenclature, the 2023 Toyota Prado, the J150 model of this SUV, is typically available in four trim levels: GX, GXL, VX, and range-topping Kakadu. All trims, except the five-seat base GX, are seven-seat options.

This year’s release represents the last iteration in the current, tired generation of Toyota Prado, with the long-awaited overhaul of the nameplate coming in 2024.

The current 150 series, first released in 2009, barely made any severe changes to the 120 series in production since 2002, sharing the same ladder frame chassis and an identical platform. Hence, it is no surprise that Toyota is finally wrapping things up with this model.

While its old age is strongly evident with the 2023 Toyota Prado, you get the big plus of a tried and tested formula, with all the bugs being ironed out over the years.

Whichever trim you pick, your only option is a 201-horsepower 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine that comes paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
