2024 Highlander
- Manufacturer: Toyota
- Model: Highlander
The Toyota Highlander, one of the best-known mid-size crossover SUVs with three-row seating, has been produced by Toyota since 2000. It is one of the first car-based SUVs that prioritized on-road comfort and fuel efficiency and, in the process, blazed the path to more family-friendly crossovers.
With previous releases, the Highlander has been Toyota’s shotgun family SUV, with options ranging from the midsize to large SUV market segment and featuring a long list of trims with varying drivetrain configurations, engine options, interior alternatives, and even exterior design.
Toyota brings some changes to this ethos with the 2024 model by introducing a larger Grand Highlander, with a longer wheelbase, as a different nameplate to compete with large SUVs like the Nissan Armada and the Ford Expedition, leaving the 2024 Toyota Highlander to embrace its role as a mid-size SUV fully.
However, this change would be a gradual process as the only significant change to the trim lineup for the 2024 Toyota Highlander is the ditching of the base L trim.
Elsewhere, the Highlander continues to provide its mix of accommodating practicality, logical utility-first approach to onboard features, superior fuel economy for its weight class, middle-of-the-pack driving character, and the unimpressive generic styling Toyota maintains on this lineup.
While the Toyota Highlander offers subpar interior styling when placed side-by-side with competitors like the Hyundai Palisade and the Kia Telluride, the Limited and Platinum trims take some steps towards bridging the gap, offering more luxurious features like posh leather upholstery and a premium JBL sound system.
Under the hood, Toyota replaces the V-6 from last year with a new four-cylinder, 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that makes 265 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed transmission and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive options.
Alternatively, the hybrid system on the Highlander Hybrid uses a less powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission to make a combined 243 HP and provide even more superior fuel efficiency.
