The Toyota Tundra is the Japanese carmaker’s answer to the long-running, best-selling trucks in the United States, the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
While the Tundra rarely ever packs enough sheer power and brand acceptance to dethrone these segment leaders, it typically charts a different route than the established formula employed by Ford and Chevrolet to offer an eccentric third choice. The 2024 Toyota Tundra displays a similar quirky setup.
The new generation Tundra, introduced in 2022, gets a few cosmetic upgrades to both its exterior and interior and sees significant improvements to its interior compared to its predecessor, albeit without winning any awards for best design, as its competition in this segment is quite stiff.
Nevertheless, with United States truck-buying demographics, performance is often higher than good looks on the list of potential decisive factors. Here, although the 2024 Toyota Tundra holds its own comfortably, it does not do enough to challenge either the F-150 or the Silverado 1500.
For some, the absence of a V-8 engine configuration is sacrilegious in this category and is an instant dealbreaker. Equally concerning is that you can’t get a full-time four-wheel drive powertrain on any trim.
However, for those willing to stray outside the established traditional high-powered truck box, the 2024 Toyota Tundra has plenty to offer.
Powertrain options include a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and a 473-HP V-6 hybrid alternative. The gasoline-only engine is the standard option for all trims, albeit it is tuned to produce different power levels as you move across variants. On the base SR trim, you get 348 horsepower, while the engine on higher trims outputs 389 HP.
All 2024 Toyota Tundra powertrains come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Engine aside, the 2024 Toyota Tundra offers a variety of options with seven trims to choose from, spread out across two 5.5-feet and 6.5-feet crew-cab body styles and an extended 8.1-feet bed body.
