About The Tribeca

The Tribeca is a mid-size crossover SUV that lasted from 2005 – 2014. Also known as the Subaru B9 Tribeca, the name is derived from the Tribeca neighbourhood of New York City. The ‘B9’ refers to the original concept car, the B9X. Subaru changed the name, dropping the B9 due to customer feedback, and the 9 represents the industry code for the vehicle category code.

The Tribeca featured a grille very similar to the front end of the Impreza, the Subaru R1 and the Subaru R2 Kei car. The Tribeca was built with a 3-litre box engine with 5-speed automatic transmission. 2008 saw an update which was featured at the New York International Auto Show, this model had a 3.6-liter flat-six engine producing 256 hp. It showed 10% better fuel economy.

In Northern America, there were two trim levels, Base and Limited, the latter had a moon roof, leather interior, roof rails, premium audio system and a 6 disc in-dashboard CD changer. The colour scheme wasn’t very adventurous, only available in either desert beige or slate grey. Each model came with an in-dash screen, outside temperature gauge, 2 rows of seats, 6 airbags and 2 stereo packages.

In January 2012, Subaru decided to end production for the USA, and then later in December, Australia, both due to slow sales. Units sold totalled a little under 77,000 and as such became one of the worst selling cars in Northern America in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, the first 9 months only saw unit sales reach a disappointing 1,247. Subaru made the decision to replace the Tribeca with an upmarket 7-seat crossover Subaru Ascent designed to compete with the Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder. The Ascent was revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
