2023 Highlander
- Manufacturer: Toyota
- Model: Highlander
The Highlander knows its role, and it does not try to be anything else.
In the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, the Highlander is comfortable being a middle-of-the-pack player and does not try to dethrone segment leaders the Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-9, Grand Cherokee L, or Kia Telluride from the top of any department, opting instead to provide a well-rounded option that performs decently in all sectors, while also promising the unrivaled levels of reliability that is synonymous with the Toyota brand.
The 2023 Toyota Highlander does nothing to change this status. You can expect the same bland driving character, furnishings, and onboard tech that are good enough but far from the levels of segment leaders and a broad range of trim-level options to satisfy every budget.
This year's most significant change to the lineup is Toyota’s replacement of the standard V6 engine with a new turbocharged 265-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder one. However, this change is quite confusing, as Toyota itself reports that the new engine does not bring any additional fuel economy over the V6, which begs the question, why is the base vehicle losing cylinders?
However, the optional 243-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that comes in with two electric motors in a hybrid setup for the Highlander Hybrid is a champion of fuel economy, showcasing Toyota’s superior hybrid tech expertise by besting most other hybrids in this segment at fuel efficiency.
While the standard engine ships with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the Hybrid opts for a continuously variable automatic transmission instead. Nevertheless, both setups are available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Other changes to this year’s model include the addition of a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and power-folding exterior mirrors to the Limited and Platinum models. The XLE and XSE models get a hands-free powered rear liftgate, and all trim levels now have the option of a larger 12.3-inch infotainment display screen.
