About The 4 Series

As far as most BMW models go, the 4 Series is really one of the “new kids on the block” having only been first released back in 2014. In its two generations, it has been marketed consistently as a 2-door coupe or convertible, as well as a special 4-door liftback model known as the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The first-gen models were in fact an evolution of the fifth generation of BMW 3 Series models, offering greater power and a sleek new coupe/convertible design. The main powertrain options are similar to that of other BMW models in this range, however, namely a 1.5-liter or 2-liter gasoline engine with 3 or 4 cylinders respectively. Those purchasing the high-specification M4 model, however, get an S55 engine delivering up to 493 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

The latest editions of the BMW 4 Series are competing in a tough market slot against the likes of the Genesis G70, Audi A5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and not to mention other popular BMW models like the 3 Series and 4 Series Gran Coupe. The current lineup includes the main 4 Series model, aka G22, as well as the high-spec M4 (G82) and the all-electric BMW i4 (G26) that was just launched in 2022.

The main benefit of the BMW 4 Series over the 3 Series is in aesthetics and on-road performance. The car is generally sportier and more athletic. The 3 Series, however, is more practical and spacious, especially in the rear seat, and has more trunk space. Like many other BMW models, the 4 Series comes with automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection, as well as lane departure warning and lane-keep assist. Adaptive cruise control is also available.

Despite its sporty vibe, the BMW 4 Series might surprise you with its fuel efficiency, managing 26 mpg in the city, and 34 mpg on the highway. Those numbers do drop to 24 and 33 mpg respectively when adding all-wheel drive.

In 2021, production of the i4 all-electric version of the car began for the 2022 model year. This new model is marketed under the 4 Series nameplate but is closer in relation to the 3 Series underneath but with a battery and motors providing propulsion.
