About The X2

Launched in 2018, the BMW X2 is a subcompact luxury SUV crossover, acting a sportier, more coupe-like counterpart to the more traditionally shaped BMW X1 compact SUV. Like other sportier models in the X Series, it sacrifices some of its practicality to offer sleeker, more coupe-like looks with a more sloped roofline and aerodynamic shape.

Under the hood of the X2 you’ll find either a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo gasoline engine, or a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo unit. There are also diesel equivalents of these, as well as a 1.5-liter gasoline plug-in hybrid unit with 3 cylinders paired with a 70-kW electric motor that was added in early 2020, known as the xDrive 25e.

Powertrains are paired with a 6-speed manual, 8-speed automatic (standard on all US models), or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission depending on the specific model and trim level. FWD is standard on all X2 models, with higher-end trims coming with AWD as standard.

Standard equipment in a BMW X2 includes an 8.8” infotainment screen, though could be a 6.5” unit on earlier models. There are also 17” alloys, and a control dial for the infotainment functions for those who don’t like using the touchscreen. Additional options include a driver head-up display (HUD), dynamic damper control, sports suspension, and more.

The interior is simple and elegant, following exactly what one might expect from a high-end brand like BMW, and not an inch of cheap plastic in sight. Cargo space is surprisingly generous for a model that some say “lacks utility” at 21.6 cubic feet, going up to 50.1 cubic feet when you lower the rear seats.

In terms of safety, lane departure warning, automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection all come as standard features. Additional options include adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED headlights, and further driving assistance features.
