About The UX

The UX is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV built by Lexus, a premium division of Toyota.

First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018, the UX was the smallest crossover created by Lexus and sat just beneath the NX.

Early models were based upon the GA-C Platform along with the E210 series Toyota Corolla.

Literally standing for ‘Urban Explorer’ (phonetically rather than a true initialism in English), the UX was praised for its good handling due to its low center of gravity and benefitted from Lexus’ safety system 2.0. This safety feature found in numerous vehicles, had a radar-based system that had a forward-facing millimeter-wave radar and collision warning. If an impact was unavoidable, the vehicle would engage the ‘pre-tensioning seatbelts’ which would hold a person in place to help prevent whiplash or similar injuries.

Based upon the Lexus UX concept car, the Lexus LF-UF, there were a number of variations sold under the name:

  • Lexus UX200 had a 2-liter M20A-FXS I4 petrol engine along with front-wheel drive
  • Lexus UX250h/260h was a 2-liter M20A-FXS I4 petrol hybrid engine that used a 1.4 kWh nickel-metal hydride battery
  • Lexus UX300e was the very first battery electric for the car manufacturer which boasts a 400 km range

Sales began in December 2018 for the model year 2018 and after just 12 months, updates were made to the vehicle to accommodate an Apple Car Play and Android Auto system.

In addition to these smart features, the vehicle allowed for a digital key, where the driver could use their smartphone to start the engine.

Following EURO NCAP tests, the UX did well, achieving an overall score of 5 stars, with a 96% score for adults and an 85% for children.
