The Toyota Mirai starts at a rather hefty $50,525 but it is unique of course for its use of hydrogen fuel rather than gasoline or conventional battery electric power. Toyota is hoping to create a new class of vehicles like they did with the Prius and hybrids back in 1997.

Being a hydrogen model, it works by adding hydrogen fuel, which is then stripped of its electrons, the reaction to do which creates the power to drive an electric motor. The only emission created in this process is a tiny amount of water that comes out of the tailpipe.

In the US, it’s currently only on sale in California, owing to the fact that in the US there are currently only 44 fueling stations for hydrogen cars, and 42 of those are in California.

The 2021 model year saw an overhaul of the car with lots of updates in its exterior and interior design. While it previously looked more like Toyota’s other unique child, the Prius, the 2021 models are designed to look more like a Lexus.

It’s available in 2 trim levels, XLE and the Limited, the latter of which starts at $67,025. It’s wider and longer than previous years, and has a more powerful fuel cell and a longer range of 402 miles.

On the inside, drivers get power-adjustable seats that are also heated/ventilated and feature faux leather for the upholstery, as well as keyless entry, and a huge 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.

The rest of the interior features sweeping lines and high-quality finishes that match the upscale nature of the exterior design. The Limited trim adds a moonroof, heated/ventilated rear seats and three-zone climate control.

Buyers of the Mirai enjoy additional perks, including $15,000 in fuel credit, and 21 days of free car rental if they encounter times they have to drive to destinations where there are no fueling stations nearby.
