2023 Puma

Ford revived the Puma nameplate in 2019, this time as a B-segment subcompact crossover SUV—as opposed to the subcompact that first used this name tag in the late 90s to early 2000s—and to significantly much better market reception.

For 2023, the Puma comes bearing a sportier look than most other options in this market class, packing sharp lines, menacing headlights, and an aggressive bumper that promises more than it can actually deliver.

Inside, the 2023 Puma attempts to continue this illusion, but here, it is a lot harder to keep going. While the interior on the base models offers a cabin draped more exquisitely than less lavish options like the Toyota Yaris Cross, the abundance of hard, impliable plastic panels will do nothing to convince true style aficionados.

Opting for the range-topping ST-Line and Special Edition trims brings more respite, adding options like full-leather and part-leather seats and faux carbon fiber accent, albeit at a significant price jump.

However, irrespective of trim level, the 2023 Ford Puma is a champion of driver comfort, with generous seat-height adjustment on all models and a pliable steering wheel with plenty of movement to match your preferred driving position. However, the tradeoff is that the gear stick sits relatively low, and the aggressive pillars that help give the Puma its distinct look may slightly impede visibility from the front and back at tight corners.

In terms of practicality, the Puma offers a decent effort thanks to an abundance of in-cabin cubbies and a sizable trunk that is only slightly smaller than what is available on the T-Roc or Yaris Cross. The trunk also features a nifty add-on as it has an extra waterproof compartment that sits underneath the boot’s floor and has a drain hole and plugs for easy cleaning, creating the perfect spot for wet gear or muddy shoes.

Engine-wise, your only options are small 1-liter mild-hybrid engines that pair with 48-volt electric motors and come mated with either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the optional seven-speed automatic.
