The Hyundai i30 returns this year as the same middle-of-the-pack reliable hatchback that brings no noticeable bells and whistles or edge over its closest competitors, albeit this time, with refreshed aesthetics and a revamped interior.

The i30 has always provided a dependable but boring alternative to category superstars like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, offering solid value for money. For 2023, it doesn’t do enough to escape this designation—it probably isn’t even trying.

Updates to the new car include a reimagined, larger slotted front grille that pairs with the fitted LED lights (standard in all except the base trim) to improve the car's visual presence significantly.

The i30s interior also underwent some changes, with the introduction of a new partially digital instrument cluster display, a new, larger 10.3-infotainment unit to an otherwise identical dashboard and cabin setup that has remained constant since the 2017 debut of the current generation.

Under the hood, there are no dramatic changes either, with the regular 2023 Hyundai i30 offering two gasoline mild-hybrid engines.

The base engine is a three-cylinder, 1-liter engine that outputs 120 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Alternatively, a four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine, available only with the N-line trim, offers a sizable jump in output to 159 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Both engines can be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

While these mild-hybrid engines won’t provide any excitement on the road, you can expect improved efficiency that will go easy on your pockets.

For performance enthusiasts, you are better off ditching the 2023 Hyundai i30 altogether and opting instead for its sibling, the Hyundai i30 N hot hatch, which offers a dramatic increase in performance and represents one of the shining superstars in that category.
