Ranking in the top 5 best-selling vehicles in the world and as the number best-selling non-pickup-truck nameplate in the United States is no small feat. Yet that is what the RAV4, the vehicle on which the Lexus NX is based, has managed to pull off again this year.
However, the RAV4 accomplishes this triumph while maintaining exterior aesthetics and interior fittings that may be a tad too utilitarian and spartan and not luxurious enough for large sections of American and European buyers, primarily when evaluated in conjunction with the less upscale Toyota branding.
This unique market segment is what the Lexus NX targets.
However, while the Lexus NX does provide a significantly more classy alternative to the compact RAV4, offering a significantly more handsome interior, an eye-catching, upper-class silhouette, upgraded tech features, a more robust range of powertrain options, and the broad appeal of the Lexus branding, it still falls short of the high standards of luxurious subcompact rivals like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, especially in terms of its driving experience.
Nevertheless, the 2023 Lexus NX does offer a robust daily driver to buyers who are familiar with and enjoy Lexus’s take on luxury and do not have riveting road manners at the top of their list.
Under the hood, the new NX continues with its ambition of catering to the broadest audience possible by featuring a selection of four well-varied powertrain options.
The base engine is a decent 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that comes standard with the NX250 and represents the best choice for buyers who want the basics and the cheapest price possible. From there, the 275-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged engine on the NX350 provides a considerable power jump.
There is a similar dichotomy between the two available hybrid options, with the NX350h pairing the base engine with two electric motors to up the combined power output to 239 horsepower and the range-topping NX450h+ adopting the same 302-horsepower plug-in hybrid setup that appears on the RAV4 prime.
