With the automobile market favoring SUVs over the sedan form factor for a while now, it is no surprise that the trend for small crossovers has steadily risen. Mini SUVs like the Ford Puma, Vauxhall Mokka, and SEAT Arona offer a step up (although slightly) from sedan-type vehicles, offering you that higher driving position that is one of the biggest allures of SUVs.

However, the Volkswagen Group of automakers (including SEAT) was uncharacteristically slow to jump into this market segment, and on paper, it is a move that makes sense.

Mini crossovers are a weird bunch, as they typically only cost slightly less (in some cases as much as) than the next step up in sign, compact SUVs, yet generally provide a considerably inferior driving experience.

However, this sentiment is heavily ignored by the market, as evidenced by the SEAT Arona, first released in 2017, which quickly rose to become the brand’s top-selling offering globally despite lacking any considerable selling point other than a driving position that is slightly higher than a sedan.

A mid-cycle facelift in 2021—which mainly carries over to the 2023 Arona—brings some improvement to the cabin (especially with the new larger 8.25-inch infotainment screen that now comes standard on the base and the new 9.2-inch unit on higher trim levels). However, it is still essentially an unimaginative rehash of what you get in the SEAT Ibiza (with which it shares the same wheelbase.)

With the car’s practicality levels also being reasonably mediocre, the only things it has going for it over its smaller sibling are its slightly higher driving position and decent exterior aesthetics.

Under the hood, the 2023 SEAT Arona features a standard 1-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that is available in two tuning levels: 94 horsepower and 109 horsepower. The lower engine is manual only, while the higher-tuned variants can also be ordered with a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. The range-topping powertrain is a beefier 148-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that comes standard with the automatic gearbox.
