2024 CX-5
Most car enthusiasts consider the compact crossovers segment pretty boring, with vehicles that prioritize functionality and practicality over all else.
The Mazda CX-5 is one of the few nameplates that balks this trend yet does so with such class that it still ranks as one of the market segment’s most popular options.
Whether you believe a compact crossover can be cool or not, we can all agree that the CX-5 comes the closest to that status. A good-looking exterior, combined with a focus on style for the interior and superior driving experience (for the category) to create a unique piece that has crept its way into the heart of many market participants.
However, while the 2024 Mazda CX-5 still retains everything that contributed to the massive demand for this nameplate, the vehicle is due for an update, and we won’t get one this year. The only notable change to the new release is the addition of a new Carbon Turbo trim level borrowed from the 3 sedan, hatchback, and the CX-30 crossover lineups.
Nevertheless, with more luxurious new competitors now hot on its heels, the 2024 CX-5 still manages to provide an attractive enough package to sway many buyers.
Matching the aesthetically pleasing exterior is an upscale cabin featuring first-class materials and a pristine layout that combine to create a deluxe ambiance that is on par with what you would expect in an Audi or Mercedes-Benz.
However, to provide the enhanced styling points, the Cx-5 sacrifices a significant amount of legroom, cargo space, and towing capacity, making it a bit less practical than some of its stiffest competition. This is expected, though, as luxury typically has a price in some other department.
Under the hood, the base engine is an inline-four that produces 187 horsepower and comes with standard all-wheel drive. Mazda also opts against the category-standard CVT transmission for a traditional six-speed automatic, creating an enhanced driving experience that matches this nameplate’s unique profile.
An overpowered 256-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged engine is also available as an optional upgrade.
