EVs are fast becoming the new normal for many drivers, and this has allowed many emerging brands the opportunity to gain recognition and market share as everyone tries to move to electric models on near equal footing. Only the likes of dedicated EV producers such as Tesla have more advantage.

Hyundai is one of those movers, and their 2019 Hyundai Ioniq EV is a great example of a pioneering mass-produced EV model that makes electric driving more accessible to more people.

While the Ioniq EV is the most expensive in the 3-car Ioniq lineup --- the others are the hybrid and the plug-in hybrid models --- it is also lauded as the best of the 3. In many markets it remains the most affordable EV anywhere, and is packed with great features.

First of all, the exterior styling is sleek, modern and carries universal appeal, unlike some other more divisive hybrid and electric designs such as the Toyota Prius. The sloping rear roofline does, however, make rear headroom a bit tight. It does offer a generous 26.5 cubic feet of luggage space, however, which is very respectable.

As an EV, the instant torque makes it fun and easy to drive either in the city or further afield. It handles beautifully on twisty roads, with precise steering and good grip on the road with body roll being confined only to the tightest corners at higher speeds.

One slightly disappointing aspect in the Ioniq EV is that the battery is only a 28-kWh unit that in a single charge delivers up to 124 miles of range. That’s not exactly class-leading, but for the lower starting rate of just over $30,000, it’s what you might expect. You generally have to pay more to get more miles!
