A 3-row SUV for some is an attractive alternative to getting a minivan. The 2019 Nissan X-Trail was designed initially to fulfil that kind of market niche. This large and stylish SUV certainly looks the part, but the lack of 4WD in the 2019 model in some markets makes it less than ideal for real adventure or off-road riding.

In the USA the car goes by the name Rogue due to the changes made to the model to cater to that large and lucrative market.

Having said that, the X-Trail’s extended wheel arches, elegant curves, powerful front- and rear-end designs, attractive lighting signature and comfortable interior have made it a popular model. There’s only about 20 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, but that’s a solid figure for a 3-row model. Put the rear seats down and it goes up to 70.49 cubic feet, making it one of the most cargo-friendly models anywhere.

So the looks are there, and the utility, but what about performance? The X-Trail is powered by a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine outputting up to 169-hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Both FWD and 4WD drivetrains were made available, but not in all markets. The powertrain is paired to a 6-speed CVT as the transmission.

The interior exhibits typical Nissan craftsmanship and quality, but it isn’t exactly luxurious or refined. It’s comfortable and functional, but most of all it is spacious, which is important in a 7-seater family car. It has the best rear seat legroom in its class.

For safety and ADAS features, Nissan is typically generous with its offering in the X-Trail, including autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning and more. With fuel economy at just over 28-mpg, this large SUV is decently efficient as well.

The center stack features a 7-inch touchscreen with the Nissan Connect infotainment system, which while not so glamorous remains a dependable and user-friendly system compared to many others.
