Despite all the rave about SUVs, barely any city dwellers need one, and for many, a small practical hatchback like the Ford Focus offers a more sensible alternative.

For several decades now, Ford has been a prominent player in this compact family car market segment, thanks in part to the sustained excellent reception of the Ford Focus. Hence, it isn’t surprising that this renowned model returns for this year essentially unchanged.

Since this nameplate got a minor refresh with last year’s 2022 model, Ford does not temper with the aesthetics, opting instead to add a new 13.2-inch infotainment display unit (complete with Ford’s latest digital suite and Andriod Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality) to the dashboard, which looks humongous in a car this small. This update significantly improves the tech suite on the Focus, placing it head and shoulders above most similarly-sized competitors.

However, the Focus’s true claim to fame stems from its fun-to-drive nature and an overall superior driving experience to most of the other options in its class. Even the base Focus offers better handling and smoother road manners than almost anything else you would find in this market segment, save for the Volkswagen Golf, a fellow market leader.

Unsurprisingly, this enhanced driving profile comes with a matching higher price, which makes other options like the Kia Ceed and Skoda Octavia better alternatives if affordability is at the top of your buying list.

However, if performance is the name of the game for you, you can even up things further by switching to the sportier ST-Line trim that offers a more aggressive suspension system at a slight price bump.

Under the hood, you get your choice of three powertrain setups: a 1-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that can be tuned to produce either 125 or 155 horsepower, a mild-hybrid that pairs the same engine with a motor for similar power output by improved fuel efficiency, and a 120-horsepower four-cylinder 1.5-liter diesel engine.

All three powertrains come with both six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission options.
