The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric is really a standout EV in that it takes the best things that people love about the gasoline Hyundai Kona SUV and keeps them, while creating a range-blasting and fantastic electric version that quickly became a go-to for many first-time EV buyers, especially those making the switch from gasoline to electric.

The 2019 Kona Electric is blessed with a relatively large 64-kWh battery pack that’s tied to a 201-hp electric motor. The car’s drivetrain is FWD, and some may be a little disappointed to learn that AWD was not offered on the 2019 model. The battery gets an impressive single-charge range of 258 miles in optimal conditions, which is 20 miles better than the equivalent Chevy Bolt EV.

When charging using a level 2 home charger, you can expect to complete a charge from near empty to full in around 9-10 hours. Level 3 DC fast charging will add 80 percent to the battery in under an hour --- 54 minutes to be precise.

The electric powertrain delivers an aggressively fast-accelerating SUV, charging from 0 to 60-mph in just 6.4 seconds. What’s more, it offers very advanced regenerative braking technology that works with one-pedal driving technology. It’s the efficiency of the regen braking that helps the overall range to be so good, even in winter where drops in the range are not as extreme as one might expect.

The interior features quality materials, but even with a higher price tag you don’t get any improvement on that, which some can find a bit of an anti-climax. However, soft-touch and high-quality materials abound in the 2019 Kona Electric.

Standard ADAS features include blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. Optional extras include adaptive cruise control and pedestrian technology, but they’re only available on the top-level trim.
