Toyota is probably best known for its extensive range of hybrid cars, but those in the know are keenly aware of their prowess in the world of pickup trucks, too. The 2019 Toyota Hilux is a fine example of their study, dependable models that are ready for absolutely anything.

The 2019 Hilux model is a part of the 8th generation, which has been facelifted to give it a more refined and respectable demeanor for when people are driving about town, but the addition of finer styling points has done nothing to detract from the superlative performance and strength of this pickup.

What the updates have really done, however, is make the Hilux feel more at home on regular asphalt roads. For instance, the new Pitch and Bounce control system helps automatically adjust engine torque to better suit whatever road surface it’s on.

The standard engine is a 2.4L diesel unit outputting up to 148-hp but, more impressively, a huge 295 lb-ft of torque. It needs that torque, too, because the 2019 Hilux is built with a 20-percent more rigid ladder frame chassis than the 2018, which along with many new tech features has made it a heavier ride.

The 6-speed manual transmission drivetrain gets up to 34-mpg combined fuel consumption, which is very pleasing in the pickup truck sector. Further practicality is found in the enlarged flatbed which now boasts an increased width of 1645mm (64.7 inches), and a length of 1525mm (60 inches), but those ratings go way up if you get the single cab body style.

The Hilux boasts towing capacity starting at 2500-kg (just over 5500-lbs), and a maximum payload capacity of about 1300-kg (2900-lbs). That’s competitive and sufficient for many, but many US-brand pickup trucks can offer more when it comes to towing and payload. The Hilux is really the more efficient truck that’s a friendlier choice in markets where gas comes at an extreme premium.
