In 2003 the new Mk5 version of the Golf went on sale in Europe - it wouldn't make it to the USA until a year later in 2004.

North American buyers were still being sold the Mk4, a model with a strong "bubble"-like design.

This new Mk5 was a lot more executive in its styling and was noticeably smaller on the outside.

VW managed to actually increase the space inside the car though, mostly through redesigning the suspension to take up less space.

The American Mk4 Golf that was still on sale in 2004 was an example of the last of its kind to be sold there.

The retirement of the Mk4 model also saw the demise of the Bora/Jetta in that region as well due to them being almost identical mechanically.

In Europe, the new 2003 Mk5 model was available with a limited number of trims and body styles.

The continent would have to wait until 2007 for the station wagon and 2004 for the saloon and the minivan "Plus" version.

For the performance versions, these came later than 2003 also:

  • GT - 2005
  • GTI - 2004
  • R32 - 2005

Many of the performance versions of the car were teased to the public in 2003 in anticipation of their release, making this year pretty exciting for VW Golf fans.
