Before launching the new third-generation SX4 models in 2021, the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross underwent a number of design changes between 2016 and 2020 when it was still within the second generation.

The biggest change that was brought into the second generation was the discontinuation of petrol and diesel engines in the European market and replacing them in April 2020 with the 1.4L K14D mild-hybrid engine, known simply as the Boosterjet SHVS. It was put in to help the car comply with new Europe 6d emissions standards.

On top of getting a new engine, the 2020 model received new fuel injectors, a new fuel pump, and a dual VVT system. The mild-hybrid system was a 48-volt system that along with the upgraded engine promised a 17-percent better fuel economy overall.

This 2020 SX4 S-Cross shares its platform with the Grand Vitara, another subcompact crossover SUV from this Japanese automaker.

Using the mild-hybrid system, the 2020 Suzuki SX4 S-Cross was able to coast below 10-mph entirely on electric power, which according to Suzuki also helped to provide additional torque for a more pleasing on-road performance. Having said that, it’s not a performance machine, still only achieving 0-62 in over 10 seconds.

It is, however, efficient. Distance testing over 200 miles shows that it can average about 32-mpg when going mainly on the highway with some city driving interspersed along the way. Its official combined rating is 37.8-mpg so when on your regular daily commute or school run it can do even better.

While on the road, the suspension isn’t the kindest on this 2020 SX4 S-Cross model. If you hit rough asphalt or imperfections in the road, you certainly feel it. Having said that, the car is pleasingly nimble and handles corners very well, with well-balanced steering and a good feeling of stability on all road types.
