The Volkswagen Up! is classed as a city car and is built on the company's tiny NSF platform.

This NSF chassis is also used by the SEAT Mii and the Skoda Citigo with plans on using it on a new subcompact crossover SUV called the Taigun that was canceled.

Originally, production of the car began in 2011 to replace the Fox model that occupied city car classification before it.

You can find 3 and 5-door examples of the car on sale with the engine in the front powering the front wheels, the complete opposite of what the original concept car displayed.

This Up! offers a first for the city car segment, it has a safety system that can detect the risk of collision and apply the brakes automatically.

Many other models from the German automaker include this feature such as the much larger Golf and Jetta.

This City Emergency Braking system is activated automatically at speeds of less than 19mph and to fully understand it it's recommended you read the 2021 Volkswagen Up! owner's manual.

Inside the PDF version of the manual, you can learn all about the various other systems that keep an eye on your driving that keep you safe too.

Downloading, viewing and printing it off are all completely free to do and you can even keep a printed copy of the manual in the car with you just in case.
