About The Aviator
Originally the Lincoln Aviator was a model that ran for just 3 years back between 2002 and 2005.
It was classed as a mid-size luxury SUV and was essentially a rebadged Ford Explorer with a more premium finish.
One choice of engine was available for this first generation Aviator, a 4.6-liter V8 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
2005 was the final model year for the original car and was replaced in 2007 with the MKX that was also based on a Ford chassis (the Edge).
Second Generation Aviator
This model line went back into production in 2019 for the 2020 model year again based on the Explorer chassis.
It is thought that this is the replacement for the MKT line although that is not an official statement from the American automaker.
You can find the owner’s manuals for this revived generation of the Aviator on this page starting with 2019.
The new Aviator is now classed as a mid-size crossover SUV, roughly the same size but now lacking any real offroad equipment underneath.
This change is beneficial for sales as it leads to a lower weight for the car and better fuel economy, a bigger pull for customers than offroad capability.
All of the new Aviator models are fitted with the same engine, a twin-turbocharged 3-liter V6 with an optional plug-in hybrid system.
In terms of safety, the new model boasts autonomous driver aids such as automatic braking in the event of a potential collision and pedestrian detection.
