Suzuki introduced the Swift to the supermini market after looking for a replacement for their Cultus model.

They set out not just to make a standard addition to the market but to create something that would carve out its own unique space.

To do this they targeted the sporty end of the market by making the base Swift a sportier car than what people generally expected.

It became its own line in 2004, although the Swift nameplate had been used for two decades before that on a rebadged Cultus sold in certain markets.

This Swift was launched with a high-profile marketing campaign led by Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo across Europe.

Sales were way above expectations and the base model was offered with a 1.3-liter engine rated at 90bhp - a lot more than most base versions of superminis.

A lot of European supermini competitors would start with an entry model at around 1000cc, such as the Ford Fiesta and Renault Clio.

Swift Sport

To capitalize further on the sporty image of the car a Sport trim was made available in 2005 to compete with hot-hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Suzuki added a high-compression high-revving 1.6-liter engine to the car that was rated at 123bhp and increased the length of the wheelbase by 7cm.

Outside of the car it was very apparent it was different from the standard model, flared arches and a spoiler completed the look with racing bumpers.

To improve handling the suspension was made stiffer and disk brakes were installed inside all of the four 16-inch alloy wheels.

After the Swift moved into its second generation in 2010 a new Sport model was launched 2 years later.

This Swift Sport boasted 130bhp now with an optional 6-speed manual transmission or CVT with a 7-speed manual model.

In 2017 this Swift Sport was discontinued as the car moved into its third generation, although a new Sport model was introduced pretty quickly based on the new Swift.

2017 Third Generation Swift

This 2017 model is the first of the third generation and is offered with a hybrid transmission for the first time.

It is built on the same HEARTECT platform as the Ignis and many other Suzukis and shares many of the same engines, transmissions and features.

To find out the possible features that the 2017 Swift can come with you can read through the owner's manual on this page.

It only covers the 2017 Swift and Swift Sport so if you are shopping for that particular model then you can get a good idea of what to expect if you haven't bought it yet.
