The 2019 Acura MDX is a larger 3-row crossover, that much is clear when looking at this SUV. But what people don’t always expect is that this larger SUV is extremely capable and agile on the road. It’s available either as the gasoline MDX, or as the MDX Sport Hybrid version. The former starts at $45,295, and the latter at $53,795.

The 2019 MDX is powered by a very impressive 290-hp V6 engine which is ideal for its 3-row setup. The extra power makes it agile and speedy regardless of where you’re driving it. The car feels just as comfortable at highway speeds and in the city. The V6 delivers an 0-60 acceleration time of just 5.7 seconds.

It shares its chassis with other Acuras and Hondas such as the Ridgeline, the Passport and the Pilot.

The powertrain is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission, but Honda’s luxury wing also provides paddle shifters on the Sport Hybrid, which make it feel more like a performance vehicle rather than a family SUV. The main downside with the hybrid version, however, is that it isn’t a good candidate for towing, whereas the pure gasoline version can tow up to 5,000-lbs.

Drive quality in the Acura MDX is further enhanced by the advanced AWD system from Acura. This is the key to what makes the MDX the agile performer that no one quite expects a 3-row SUV to be.

Honda is quite generous when it comes to standard equipment, including a push-button electronic shifter, a two-screen infotainment system, many USB and power points, enough cup holders for a small army, and standard compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a little disappointing that you only get 15.8 cubic feet of cargo with all 3 rows up, but if you put down all of the rear seating that grows to 90.9 cubic feet.

In all, the 2019 Acura MDX is a strong contender in its class, and while not the best-equipped, it makes 3-row SUV driving really enjoyable!
