Audi has long competed in the subcompact luxury crossover SUV segment, one of the toughest and most competitive areas in the entire marketplace. The Audi Q2 first arrived on the scene in 2016, announced for the 2017 model year. It’s marketed as a 5-door SUV in the subcompact luxury crossover segment, either with a FWD or an AWD drivetrain.

Unusually, Audi does not sell the Q2 SUV in the North American market, but it does sell a long-wheelbase version of the car in China. It is therefore focused almost entirely on the European market where there is perhaps greater demand for city-friendly compact SUV models and where they are usually better received.

Powertrains in the Q2 are smaller than those offered in the larger Audi SUV models, but that’s also fairly typical in the European marketplace. The base-level model had a 1.0L inline-3 turbo engine outputting up to 114-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful options included a mid-range 1.4L 148-hp gasoline unit, or a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder unit that could get up to 188-hp. A 1.6L and 2.0L diesel engine were also made available.

Underneath the small SUV is the same platform that you would find underneath the Volkswagen Golf and the similar-sized Volkswagen T-Roc.

The Q2 even made it into Audi’s growing family of electric models, with the Q2L e-tron model being introduced in 2019, but that was exclusively made for the Chinese market. The e-tron model has a single-charge range of 165 miles powered by a 38 kWh battery.

The design of the Q2 followed much the same lines as previous Audi Q-Series SUV models, with the interior also boasting elegant and refined materials, a digital cockpit, and ambient lighting that changes color with the time of day.

The bad news for fans of the Audi Q2 is that it has already been announced that sales of the Q2 will stop at the end of the SUV’s current generation life cycle. The company cites disappointing sales in spite of the market in Europe looking favorable initially.
