Hyundai’s long-awaited pickup truck is an all-new addition to its eclectic vehicle range, based on the Tucson platform.

You can find this platform at work underneath the 2022 Tucson, the 2022 Santa Fe and the 2022 Sonata too.

Production began in 2021 after years of speculation on its appearance and features after it was first unveiled as a concept truck back in 2015.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is the first production model to answer those questions.

It starts at a very affordable MSRP of $23,990. It’s available in 4 different trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Premium and Limited. With even the top trim falling under $40,000 at the starting rate, it means the 2022 Santa Cruz is extremely well placed in terms of price point.

The standard powertrain in the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is a 2.5L GDI 4-cylinder unit outputting up to 191-hp. However, the higher SEL Premium and Limited trims offer a 2.5L turbocharged version with up to 281-hp.

The higher trims also offer an upgraded HTRAC All-Wheel Drive system for added traction and control. On-road control is also aided by the Santa Cruz’s lower ride height and shorter overall length compared to many competitors.

The standard 2.5L powertrain is rated to pull up to 3,500 lbs, but the stronger version in the higher trims can increase that to 5,000 lbs, which puts the Santa Cruz on par with the Honda Ridgeline.

Its rear bed can handle a payload capacity of maximum 1,906 lbs, which beats out segment competitors like the Ford Maverick.

The rear bed is short, but the exterior design is quite special and unique. The front LED headlights are interestingly integrated into the grille design to create a more unified appearance, and the exterior angular lines create a futuristic but powerful look.

On the inside, the 2022 Santa Cruz offers heated/ventilated seats, digital instrument displays, a large central infotainment screen, and use of Hyundai’s digital key allowing your smartphone to become your working key. It’s a real 21st-century truck for a new age.
