2021 Škoda Scala

Škoda Scala Photo

The 2021 Scala is Skoda’s answer to the likes of the Ford Focus or the Vauxhall (Opel) Astra as a compact car slightly larger than a VW Golf or Polo, but smaller than a wagon.

The front-end is heavily imprinted with the typical Skoda styling DNA with the same shape and style of front grille as you find on other popular Skoda models like the Octavia. The angular lines connecting the grille and front lights are as much a hallmark on Skoda cars as the kidney grille on BMW models.

The rear-end design features a black roof spoiler that blends seamlessly with the tinted rear window to create a two-tone feel with the body color in a very stylish finish.

The interior isn’t the most premium, with a few traces of hard plastics here and there, but in general, it shows a good level of refinement and elegant simplicity.

Controls are intuitive and easy to use, and the driver’s seat and steering wheel are easy to adjust. The rear seating is comfortable for 3 adults, with plenty of knee room, but unfortunately not a flat floor. The footwells are large enough, however, to let even the middle passenger be comfortable.

The trunk is an impressive 16.4 cubic feet, which is better than most larger sedan car offerings, a whole 3.5 more cubic feet than near rivals like the Vauxhall (Opel) Astra. Lifting the trunk floor will also reveal a spare tire.

Interior storage is also impressive, with a large air-conditioned glove compartment, lots of cubby space, an umbrella space in the driver’s door, and even added traction to the cup holders so you can unscrew a bottle of soda one-handed!

The 2021 Scala is powered by either a 1.0L 3-cylinder 115-hp gasoline engine, or 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo engine with 150-hp. There’s also a diesel option with 1.6L displacement and 115-hp in power. The diesel is the most efficient at around 50-mpg.
