2018 Clio
While the number of subcompact cars that make it big in the US market isn’t so large, in the European market they form a competitive struggle that equals that of the pickup truck or SUV in America. Among the longest-present contenders for the subcompact hatchback crown in Europe has been the Renault Clio.
The Renault Clio first arrived all the way back in 1990 and is currently in its fifth generation which launched in 2019, meaning this 2018 model was some of the last of the fourth generation. It is named as the Clio, one of the 9 Muses noted in the mythology of Ancient Greece. For the Japanese market, however, it had to be renamed Lutecia because of a branding conflict with Honda.
While traditionally being a hatchback model, there was a sedan model released in 1999 called the Clio II. It was the subject of a controversy in which the hood would fly open on the Clio II when being driven at high speeds. This was obviously dangerous, but Renault found no inherent fault with the catch, just that it wasn’t being cleaned or lubricated properly during servicing, so no recall was issued.
The latest fifth-generation Clios offer many improvements compared to previous models, including innovative and efficient powertrains that deliver up to 55-mpg on average. The exterior has also been greatly changed and improved over the years, and the interior gets a very impressive 9.3-inch touchscreen display, customizable driver instrument cluster, LED headlights and numerous ADS features delivered by the many cameras and sensors.
ADAS features include hands-free parking, 360-degree camera, lane-keeping assist, road sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and more. It’s a very well kitted-out car for a compact, but with a starting price in markets like the UK of $24,440, you pay a hefty premium for those additions.
The Clio endures in popularity for its relative affordability, efficiency, and reliability. It competes in a fierce segment with the likes of the Peugeot 208, VW Polo, Vauxhall/Opel Corsa, and Ford Fiesta, among others.
