About The Freelander

The Land Rover Freelander is a compact SUV that was manufactured by Land Rover between 1997 and 2015.

Land Rover later released the Freelander 2 in 2006, which can be considered the second-generation model. This was eventually succeeded by the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque model.

It has featured both a 3-door and 5-door SUV layout. Interestingly, the 3-door variant was a softback convertible, which was later mirrored by the Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet. The Freelander has also featured both all-wheel and four-wheel drivetrains.

Due to the Freelander’s status as a modern icon, it has faced a lot of competition over the years. The most notable of these include the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, and BMW X3.

Under Jaguar Land Rover’s leadership, it was also manufactured alongside the Jaguar X-Type.

Trim options changed between the first and second generations. For the last generation, these included the base S, GS, XS, Dynamic/SE, HSE, and HSE Lux/HST. These were updated to be in line with Land Rover’s modern trim options.

Due to the various ownerships of Land Rover over the years, Freelander models have been powered by various powerplants from BMW, Ford, and Volvo.

Petrol engine options have ranged from the 1.8-liter K-Series inline-4 found in the first iteration up to the 3.2-liter Volvo inline-6 in the final version. Diesel engines consist of two 2-liter inline-4s for the first Freelander, and three 2.2-liter Duratorq inline-4s for the second.

Transmissions have typically only 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes for the first and second generations respectively. Both versions offered either a manual or automatic transmission.
