About The CR-V

Since its release in 1995, the compact crossover SUV Honda CR-V has been a popular sight in Japan and then North America 2 years later when it was released in that region.

Compact crossover SUVs are now a big business with almost every major auto manufacturer releasing their own, such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5.

According to the Honda CR-V owner’s manual, the name CR-V is apparently supposed to represent a “comfortable runabout vehicle” though this may have just been a fortunate accident.

This car is built in many different locations around the world, including the UK and Japan and then exported to many different markets.

In recent years the company has started producing the CR-V in Wuhan in order to target the Chinese market with the car.

The original model that was released in the 1990s had a very commercial/agricultural feel to it though with each face-lift redesign it has become more of a comfortable family car.

During the early years of production, you were limited to just one engine size (a 2-liter gasoline) mated to a 4 speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

The second-generation model of the Honda CR-V shared its platform with several other cars from the Japanese automaker, including the Element.

As each new generation of the car was released the manufacturer added many different engines to choose from including diesel and hybrid technologies.

The addition of a CVT helped the car gain even better fuel economy if chosen by the customer, instructions on how to operate it are included in the Honda CR-V owner’s manual.

The fifth-generation model brought a lot of new technology to the CR-V including important mobile device connectivity and blind-spot information to improve safety.

When buying the 5th generation model of this car you can choose from one of 5 varied trims that control the level of features found inside of it, including:

  • EX
  • EX-L
  • LX
  • SE
  • Touring

In 2022 the CR-V is due to get an upgrade as the Civic (the car which originally gave its platform for this model to be built on) has seen a major update.

Thanks to improvements in chassis and engine technology the fuel economy is expected to be much better in the updated CR-V, a key concern for many car owners.

FAQ's

Q: What is the difference between a Honda CR-V LX and SE?

A: The base trim for the Honda CR-V is called the LX and the second one-up is called the SE (out of a possible 5 trims). The main features that separate the SE from the base LX trim on the CR-V are the security system and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Q: How often does a Honda CR-V need an oil change?

A: Honda recommends that you change the oil and filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. An ideal situation would be that you service your CR-V every 6 months and tie the oil change in with that.

Q: What would cause a Honda CR-V not to start?

A: Many factors could be affecting your CR-V and causing it to not start. The easiest problem to fix would be the battery, if this is dead then a jump start and a new battery is easy to sort out. More sinister problems could include a faulty alternator or starter motor leading to a more expensive repair bill.

Q: What common problems plague the Honda CR-V?

A: On older models, the CR-V has been known to have issues with the transmission, air-conditioning and unwanted acceleration from the car. Another common problem that has been reported is excessive oil consumption that can lead to a repair bill in the thousands of dollars.

Q: Is there a Honda CR-V hybrid?

A: Currently, there is a mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrain available for the CR-V (as of 2021). The plug-in hybrid version (ePHEV) can be topped up at a charging point and be driven on electricity alone.
