The Bayerische Motoren Werke AG auto manufacturer (or as its better known BMW) is a German multinational company formed in 1916. Originally the company produced aircraft engines, apparent in its logo which represents the spinning blades of a propeller. 1 Series
launched in 2004, the 1 Series is the smallest BMW on offer (other than the Mini range of models the company sells). It originally sat on a rear-wheel-drive platform but was moved to be front-wheel-drive in its third generation
2 Series
The 2 Series is marketed as a more upmarket version of the 1 Series. It was first launched in 2014, ten years after the 1 Series model that it was based on. It is offered in a variety of gasoline diesel turbocharged engines
3 Series
The 3-Series is the most popular model on sale by the German automaker BMW. It spawned from the larger 5-Series back in the mid-1970s and was eventually used as the platform for many other cars including the M3 and X3
4 Series
Launched in 2014, the 4 Series is a relatively new line compared to the more traditional 3 Series and 5 Series the German automaker is typically associated with. Its sort of like a sporty version of the 3 Series with greater power
5 Series
Starting way back in the 1960s, the 5-Series BMW line has come a long way with many offshoots during that time including the high-performance M5 trim and the X5 crossover SUV
6 Series
The 6 Series is a large grand tourer model produced by BMW from the mid-1970s all the way through to this day. It acts like a sporty version of the 7 Series with less practicality but still boasts 5-doors
7 Series
The 7 Series is the flagship model for the BMW sedan range. It has been manufactured since the 1970s and represents the company's best technology and features in one package
8 Series
The 8 Series is a large grand tourer model that was sold during the 1990s and retired in 1999. The line came back in 2018 to take on the practical sports car market with its V6 and V8 engine options
iX
The iX is the first all-electric model from BMW since they introduced the i3 and i5 lines in the early days of electric cars. It adopts an SUV body type (mid-size luxury SUV to be exact) and production began in 2021 for the 2022 model year
X1
The X1 model is the smallest of the German automakers SUV lineup built on the 1-Series chassis. Buyers can choose from a variety of trims including several sports trims such as the M Sport version and some that are more tuned to luxury
X2
The X2 is marketed as the more upmarket version of the small crossover SUV the X1, packed full of technology and comfort features. It is built on the same platform as the X1, the Mini Countryman, the 1 Series and the 2 Series
X3
Thanks to the massive success of the X5, BMW decided to release a smaller version called the X3. It was built on the 3-Series platform with no added off-road equipment to keep the weight low like the X5
X4

X5
The X5 was the first mid-size crossover SUV and started a trend that has continued growing to this day. It is built on the BMW 5-Series chassis and benefits from lower weight than a traditional SUV thanks to the lack of offroad equipment
X6
The X6 is a large crossover SUV with a fastback design. It is essentially the same same as the X5 but with a sleeker design and reduced practicality due to the large sloping roof at the back eating into the boot space

Z4
The BMW Z4 has returned to the auto market repeatedly unlike its predecessors the Z1, Z3 and Z8. The most modern iteration of the 2-seater sports car was relaunched in 2018 for its third generation and sits on a platform joint developed with ToyotaAbout BMW
The company switched to producing cars in 1918 but briefly started producing aircraft engines once again during the 1930s and 1940s to help with the German war effort.
The company also runs several other brands for different segments of the market. They use the acquired Mini brand to sell small vehicles without harming the muscular branding of BMW as well as the Rolls Royce brand for high-end luxury cars.
During the 1990s they acquired the Land Rover and Jaguar brands from the Rover Group before selling them onto Ford at the turn of the Millenium.
BMW has had successes in motor-sport over the years, using both 4 wheeled cars and 2 wheeled motorbikes (where the company has made many advancements in technology).
You may find BMW engines in other makes of cars, they are known as a leader in engine design and technology. Newer technologies such as lithium-air batteries, pioneered by BMW can be found in the latest model of Toyota Supra.
BMW X5
Popular in both the USA and European regions is the BMW X5 SUV released in 1999.
Underneath is a platform built for a car rather than a true off-road vehicle to allow it to perform better for most customers who will rarely take it onto difficult terrain.
BMW X3
Due to the success of the X5 model several years later the German car manufacturer released a smaller model called the X3.
This model was also designed for on-road use and featured a range of engines for all budgets.
